The movie, based on a book by Sue Monk Kidd, could be accused of being overly honey-sweet (with a few stings along the way), but it features strong performances. Set in Civil Rights era South Carolina, it follows an adolescent white girl (Dakota Fanning) and her de facto nanny (Jennifer Hudson), a black woman beaten up by rednecks for standing up for herself. Runways both, they find refuge in the home of three bee-keeping sisters, August, June and May Boatwright (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo).
